Research Methodology
Research model overview
Estimates for digital penetration are based on a variety of data sources. Overall market sizing was based
on the Auto Care Factbook and Lang Annual 2019. The model developed for this research study sizes the
U.S. aftermarket parts and accessories market from 2017 to 2021 by product category and channel. Expert
interviews and adjustments were conducted at the product category level to reconcile Auto Care and Lang,
a process that involved surveys of do-it-yourself (DIY) and do-it-for-me (DIFM) customers.
For purposes of the study, we define the digital channel to include both e-tailing and e-procurement. E-tailing
includes purchases via public websites (e.g., Amazon) and includes Buy-Online-Pickup-In-Store (BOPIS).
E-procurement encompasses specialized retailer systems for pros (e.g., AutoZone Pro), shop software
(e.g., ALLDATA) and procurement systems (e.g., OPS trax).
Survey-based estimates do
not reflect the potential for
disruptions (e.g., revolutionary
e-tailing shipping technology
like widespread drones), since
respondents cannot foresee
their reactions to these. This
is intentional, since estimating
the effect of unforeseen
disruptions is too speculative
to be useful. However, it
is important to note that,
if these disruptions occur,
they would influence the
respondents’ answers and
affect the findings of the survey.
Survey overview
In December 2017, we launched two separate surveys
at the product category level in the U.S., one focusing
on DIY customers and one focused on DIFM customers.
DIY survey
The DIY survey received 3,212 respondents across
major geographies and age groups in the U.S. Tires
