Respondents by Job Category
Many respondents serve dual
roles in their respective shops.
Repair shop owners comprised
the largest number of respondents
in t
his and previous surveys
conducted in 2017 and 2018.
Of the 133 respondents, the
majority (73.7 percent) indicated
that they owned repair shops.
Over a quarter (28.6 percent) were
service managers and technicians
(28.6 percent and 27.8 percent
responding). Less than one-fifth
(17 .3 percent) had roles in their
repair shop as parts managers. While there has been a slight decrease in the number of respondents in 2018
compared to past surveys, the percentage of owners in this survey still surpassed those in the 2015 survey.
In 2015, shop owners accounted for 70.6 percent of all survey respondents. (Note: Percentages exceed
100 percent because respondents serve dual roles).
ASE Certified Technicians
Respondents who self-identified as technicians were further asked
if they were Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified. In line
with the decrease in the number of technician respondents in this
year’s survey, the number of ASE-certified technicians decreased
compared to last year. Over half (57.9 percent) of all technicians
said they were ASE-certified. Furthermore, the vast majority of the
ASE-certified technicians (67.5 percent) were employed by general
repair shops, with fewer than 10 percent by OE dealership repair
shops (7.8 percent) (see next page for details). 0%
