Many respondents serve dual roles in their respective shops. A vast majority of the respondents (81.8 percent)
indicated that they owned repair shops. Over a quarter of all respondents were service managers (28.3
percent) and technicians (25.3 percent), with over a fifth of them parts managers (21.2 percent). Owners
and service managers comprised most of the respondents in 2017. (Note: Percentage exceeds 100 percent

ASE Certified Technicians
Respondents who self-identified as technicians were further asked
if they were Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified. Roughly
three-fifths (59.6 percent) of technicians were ASE-certified in 2017.
A majority of the ASE technicians (67.9 percent) worked in general
repair/service shops. Less than 10 percent worked at specialty
repair shops (8.9 percent), with 1.8 percent at stand-alone quick
